Margaret's father was James Hamilton and her mother was Jane Tudhope.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Hamilton and <Unknown>. She had two brothers and seven sisters, named Thomas, Hamilton, Elizabeth, Jeanie, Janet, Hamilton, Jemima, Mary and Belle.  She was the fifth oldest of the ten children.
