Mary's father was Richard Forrest and her mother was Janet Turner. Her maternal grandparents were John Turner and Elisabeth Manuel. She had five brothers and two sisters, named Forrest, John, Richard, William, James, Elizabeth and Janet. She was the third youngest of the eight children. She died at the age of 91 in 1970 in Edinburgh.
