James' father was Richard Forrest and his mother was Janet Turner. His maternal grandparents were John Turner and Elisabeth Manuel. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Forrest, John, Richard, William, Elizabeth, Mary and Janet. He was the second youngest of the eight children. He died at the age of 79 in 1962 in St. Andrews and St. Leonards.
