William's father was Archibald Cunningham and his mother was Grace Gowans. His paternal grandparents were Archibald Cunningham and Elisabeth Anderson; his maternal grandparents were William Gowans and Grizzel Barclay. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Archibald, Robert, Walter, Grace, Eliza, Margaret, Agnes and Helen. He was the fifth oldest of the nine children. He died at the age of 65 on June 10th, 1895 in Michigan. He was buried in Michigan.³
