Thomas' father was Thomas Cunningham and his mother was Elisabeth Robertson. His paternal grandparents were James Cunningham and Elisabeth Walker. He had a brother and four sisters, named James, Elisabeth, Margaret, Helen and Catherine. He was the second oldest of the six children. He died due to a medical problem, Obstruction of Bowels, duration 4 days, at the age of 66 on October 18th, 1878 in Kirkliston.³
