Martha's father was John Caldwell and her mother was Eliza Maudsley Robertson. Her maternal grandparents were George Robertson and Martha Cox. She had four brothers and two sisters, named John, George, William, Roy, Agnes and Elizabeth. She was the oldest of the seven children. She died at the age of 56 in 1957 in Ontario.
