Ellen was born in 1855.

Ellen's father was James Byers and her mother was Janet Gibb. Her maternal grandparents were George Gibb and Helen Cunningham. She had eight brothers and a sister, named William, William, George, James, John, Margaret, Archibald, Janet and Jannett. She was the second oldest of the ten children. She died at the age of 47 on April 6th, 1902 in Tasmania.
