Archibald was born on February 25th, 1868 in Tasmania.

Archibald's father was James Byers and his mother was Janet Gibb. His maternal grandparents were George Gibb and Helen Cunningham. He had seven brothers and two sisters, named William, William, George, James, John, Margaret, Janet, Ellen and Jannett. He was the second youngest of the ten children. He died at the age of 80 on January 19th, 1949 in Tasmania.
