Matthew's father was John Bookless and his mother was Margaret (Maggie) Nicol Henderson. His maternal grandparents were William Henderson and Isabel Nichol. He had three brothers and four sisters, named John, William, James, Isabella, Isabella, Agnes and Maggie. He was the youngest of the eight children. He died at the age of 73 in 1978 in Edinburgh.
