John's father was John Bookless and his mother was Margaret (Maggie) Nicol Henderson. His maternal grandparents were William Henderson and Isabel Nichol. He had three brothers and four sisters, named William, James, Matthew, Isabella, Isabella, Agnes and Maggie. He was the second oldest of the eight children. He died at the age of 68 on March 23rd, 1960 in Uphall. He was buried in Fauldhouse.
