Margaret's father was John Bishop and her mother was Elspeth Bell.  Her maternal grandparents were John Bell and Elspeth Ramsay. She had two brothers and three sisters, named Patrick, James, Agnes, Helen and Janet.  She was the third oldest of the six children.
