Helen was born on December 1st, 1700 in Kirkliston. Helen's father was John Bishop and her mother was Elspeth Bell.  Her maternal grandparents were John Bell and Elspeth Ramsay. She had two brothers and three sisters, named Patrick, James, Agnes, Margaret and Janet.  She was the second youngest of the six children.
