Janet was born on May 30th, 1703 in Kirkliston. Janet's father was John Bishop and her mother was Elspeth Bell.  Her maternal grandparents were John Bell and Elspeth Ramsay. She had two brothers and three sisters, named Patrick, James, Agnes, Margaret and Helen.  She was the youngest of the six children.
