Katherine's father was Douglas Baxter and her mother was Margaret Hamilton.  Her paternal grandparents were William Baxter and Janet Johnston. She had a brother and two sisters, named Ronald, Marion and Margaret.  She was the second youngest of the four children. She had two half-sisters named Jean and Helen.
