William's father was James Armour and his mother was Janet McDonald. His maternal grandparents were William McDonald and Elizabeth Ferguson. He had three brothers and two sisters, named James, William, John, Elizabeth and Lizzie. He was the second oldest of the six children. He died at the age of 3 in 1896 in Kilmaurs.
