James' father was James Armour and his mother was Jean McMorran.  His maternal grandparents were Robert McMorran and Jean McCrone. He had five brothers and four sisters, named John, Robert, Andrew, James, Thomas, Jane, Agnes, Janet and Margaret.  He was the second youngest of the ten children.
