Nannie was born in 1874 in Horse Pasture, Henry, Virginia.  Nannie's father was John Marshall and her mother was America Preston.  Her paternal grandparents were Peter Marshall and Elizabeth Lizzie. She had six brothers and three sisters, named Patrick, Marshall, Peter, George Nelson, Daniel, Aaron, Josie, Elizabeth and America.  She was the seventh oldest of the ten children.
