Daniel was born in 1867 in Horse Pasture, Henry, Virginia.  Daniel's father was John Marshall and his mother was America Preston.  His paternal grandparents were Peter Marshall and Elizabeth Lizzie. He had five brothers and four sisters, named Patrick, Marshall, Peter, George Nelson, Aaron, Josie, Nannie, Elizabeth and America.  He was the fifth oldest of the ten children.
