America was born in 1879 in Horse Pasture, Henry, Virginia.  America's father was John Marshall and her mother was America Preston.  Her paternal grandparents were Peter Marshall and Elizabeth Lizzie. She had six brothers and three sisters, named Patrick, Marshall, Peter, George Nelson, Daniel, Aaron, Josie, Nannie and Elizabeth.  She was the youngest of the ten children.
