Marshall was born in 1858 in Horse Pasture, Henry, Virginia.  Marshall's father was John Marshall and his mother was America Preston.  His paternal grandparents were Peter Marshall and Elizabeth Lizzie. He had five brothers and four sisters, named Patrick, Peter, George Nelson, Daniel, Aaron, Josie, Nannie, Elizabeth and America.  He was the second oldest of the ten children.
