George Nelson was born on February 12th, 1865 in Horse Pasture, Henry, Virginia.  George Nelson's father was John Marshall and his mother was America Preston.  His paternal grandparents were Peter Marshall and Elizabeth Lizzie. He had five brothers and four sisters, named Patrick, Marshall, Peter, Daniel, Aaron, Josie, Nannie, Elizabeth and America.  He was the fourth oldest of the ten children.
