John was born on May 18th, 1801.  John's father was William Marshall and his mother was Mary C. Banes.  His paternal grandparents were James Marshall and Jane Lindsey. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Jane "Creative Jane", James M., William, Phineas Paxton, Elizabeth, Jane and Hester Lemen.  He was the seventh oldest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 69 on July 17th, 1870.
