Demereus was born in 1838.  Demereus' father was Samuel Lowrey and his mother was Rachael Hannah Wortman Woertman Workman.  His paternal grandparents were John Lowrey and Mary Shelly; his maternal grandparents were Abraham  Woertman Workman and <Unknown>. He had five brothers and five sisters, named William Greenleaf, John Milton, James H, Samuel E, Newton Hugh, Isabel, Eliza C, Aley, Aley B Abby and Hannah Jane.  He was the youngest of the eleven children.
