    • L to R: Lee Kaufman, Tom Adler, Bob Sayers, at Champaign, IL, 1968.  When they were all undergraduate students at the Univ. of Illinois, they constituted a band that played under the name "Girl in the Blue Velvet Band"  -- a pun based on the old song of that name.  Lee sold Tom the mandolin he is holding;  Tom is holding his c. 1953 Gibson Mastertone "bowtie" banjo.

Thomas was born on March 31st, 1947.  Thomas' father was Richard Francis Adler and his mother was Alice Blau.  His paternal grandparents were Oskar Adler and Therese Steiner (Adler). He has two brothers named Peter and Robert.  He is the second oldest of the three children.
