Mary STOURTON <http://www.tudorplace.com.ar/%20STOURTON3> The details in this biography come from the History of Parliament <http://www.history.ac.uk/hop>, a biographical dictionary of Members of the House of Commons. Born by 1505, second but first surv. son of Edward Stourton, 6th Baron Stourton, by Agnes, dau. of John Fauntleroy of Marsh, nr. Sherborne, Dorset; brother of Roger. Married by 1524, Elizabeth, dau. of Edmund Dudley of Atherington, Suss., by whom he had at least seven sons, inc. Charles <http://www.tudorplace.com.ar/Bios/CharlesStourton(8BStourton).htm>, William <http://www.tudorplace.com.ar/Bios/WilliamStourton.htm> and Arthur <http://www.tudorplace.com.ar/Bios/ArthurStourton.htm>; and two daughters. By his mistress, Agnes Ap Rhys, he had one illegitimate daughter. Kntd. 1 Nov 1523; suc. fa. as 7th Baron Stourton 13 Dec 1535. Servant of Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk <CharlesBrandon.htm> by 1520; j.p. Dorset 1528-d., Som., Wilts. 1529-d.; commr. benevolence, Som., Wilts. 1544/45, musters Wilts. 1546; lt. army in Scotland Oct. 1545; dep. Newhaven (Ambleteuse) Jun 1546-d. William Stourton began his career in the household of the Duke of Suffolk <CharlesBrandon.htm> and his wife, Mary Tudor <MaryTudor(DSuffolk).htm>, ‘the French Queen’. In 1523 he went with Suffolk <CharlesBrandon.htm>'s army to France and was knighted at Roye. When in 1524 his father, Edward, succeeded as 6th Baron Stourton, he became heir to estates in Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire. Made a justice in these three counties in 1528-9, in the autumn of 1529 he was a natural choice as one of the knights of the shire for Somerset. His Membership was, however, to prove a heavy commitment, and on 31 Dec 1531 he wrote to Cromwell <ThomasCromwell(1EEssex).htm> asking that both his father, an aged and feeble man, and he should be excused attendance at the third session. Four years later he succeeded to the barony and took his seat in the Lords for the last session of this protracted Parliament. Whether he was replaced in the Commons is not known. Beyond leading 200 men against the northern rebels <../Documents/PilgrimageofGrace.htm> in 1536, bearing the towel at the christening of Prince Edward <../aboutEdward.htm> and giving regular attendance in the Lords, he is not known to have taken much part in public affairs during the late 1530s and 40s. He was probably a conservative in religion, for he was a friend of Viscount Lisle and in Jul 1539 he wrote in favour of the Abbot of Glastonbury before his execution. He seems to have been foremost a soldier. On the outbreak of the war with Scotland in 1544 he joined the Earl of Hertford <EdwardSeymour(1DSomerset).htm> with the Wiltshire levies and fought in the Border campaigns of that and the following year. Commended for his good service by the commander, in 1546 he followed Hertford <EdwardSeymour(1DSomerset).htm> to France, where he was soon appointed deputy of Newhaven. His letters reflect his diligence and thoughtfulness in this office, which he was still holding when he died there on 16 Sep 1548. The Stourtons were not among the wealthiest or most powerful of noble families but they loomed large in their own country. Between 1541 and 1545 the 7th Baron made large purchases of lands in Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire, for which he paid some £4,500 to the crown and the 3rd Lord Ferrers. He was not on good terms with either his wife or his eldest son, Charles <http://www.tudorplace.com.ar/Bios/CharlesStourton(8BStourton).htm>, whom in 1539 he angrily described to Cromwell <ThomasCromwell(1EEssex).htm> as a ‘false hypocrite’ and worthy of the King <../aboutHenryVIII.htm>'s Bench or Marshalsea, a verdict which fell short of the 8th Baron <http://www.tudorplace.com.ar/Bios/CharlesStourton(8BStourton).htm>'s eventual fate. By his will of 8 Sep 1548 he left nothing to his wife or to his younger sons, and little to his eldest, whom none the less he named executor. The greater part of his goods and household stuff he bequeathed to his mistress Agnes Ap Rhys, dau. of Catherine Howard, Lady Bridgewater, by her first husband: Agnes, who bore him a daughter, claimed that a legal marriage had taken place between them in 1545, at Stourton Chapel, even though Stourton's wife was living, but this was rejected in several legal actions and the will itself was quashed by probate act of 1548. Administration of his father's goods was then granted to Charles <http://www.tudorplace.com.ar/Bios/CharlesStourton(8BStourton).htm>, the new Baron Stourton. He was a royal ward of Henry VIII <../aboutHenryVIII.htm>. Lord Clinton joined the retinue of King Henry VIII <../aboutHenryVIII.htm> at Boulogne and Calais in 1532. In 1534 he married, Elizabeth Blount <ElizabethBlount.htm>, mother of the King <../aboutHenryVIII.htm> bastard, Henry Fitzroy, Duke of Richmond <../aboutHenryFitzroy.htm>. She was much older than him, but his lands adjoined hers. They were to have three daughters, Bridget (was to marry Robert Dymoke of Scrivelsby <RobertDymoke.htm> and later lived at South Kyme); Catherine (was to marry Lord Borough of Gainsborough) and Margaret (was to marry Charles Lord Willoughby of Parham). In 1536, he served in the Long Parliament. This year Henry VIII <../aboutHenryVIII.htm> closed down most of the smaller monasteries in England. Barlings survived the first wave of suppression as it was a fairly prosperous abbey, but the reprieve was short lived. In Oct 1536 a rebellion against the Dissolution <../Documents/suppression_of_english_monasteri.htm>, known locally as the Lincolnshire Rising <../Documents/PilgrimageofGrace.htm>, took place. The same Monday, 2nd Oct, Edward, Lord Clinton left home on horseback, with just one servant. He headed first for Sleaford, and Lord Hussey <JohnHussey(1BSleaford).htm>. Clinton galloped on to Nottingham, then on to Lord Huntington at Ashby. By Friday, he reached the Earl of Shrewsbury at Hardwick Hall in Derbyshire. He carried letters from Cromwell <ThomasCromwell(1EEssex).htm>. Meanwhile the rebels were joined by other groups of armed men, alerted by beacons, and had spread across the Humber to Yorkshire. The Member of Parliament for Lincoln, Thomas Moigne met Robert Aske, who led the rebellion in Yorkshire (where it was called the Pilgrimage of Grace <../Documents/PilgrimageofGrace.htm>). The Abbot of Barlings, Matthew Mackarel, and six canons were implicated, although they were probably all unwilling participants. They were arrested, and the Abbot and four canons were convicted of treason and hanged at Lincoln on 26 Mar 1537. As a result of their involvement, none of the other canons received a pension. The execution of the rebels was quickly followed by the Dissolution of the Abbey in 1537. All the valuables were taken away by the King <../aboutHenryVIII.htm>'s men, the lead was stripped from the church roofs and 'more than a horse load of the Abbot's books' were carted away. The land-holdings were leased to Sir Edward Clinton and, in 1539, the abbey site was given to the King <../aboutHenryVIII.htm>'s brother-in-law, Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk <CharlesBrandon.htm>. By 1620, Sir Christopher Wray had acquired the site and built a mansion next to the ruined abbey. It seems his house did not last long for we know that it was in ruins by 1720. The derelict buildings can be seen on Millecent's drawing made around 1730 and their outline can still be traced on the ground as a complex of earthworks to the south west of the abbey buildings. When the Duke of Richmond <../aboutHenryFitzroy.htm> died in 1536, Lord Clinton took his dead stepson's title of Admiral of England, his first marriage had been a good career move. Elizabeth Lady Clinton <ElizabethBlount.htm>, returned to court as lady-in-waiting to Anne of Cleves <../aboutAnneofCleves.htm>, but not for long. She died, and Lord Clinton wasted no time in replacing her with a new wife, Ursula Stourton, who took her place at the court. She was the niece of John Dudley <JohnDudley(1DNorthumberland).htm>, and gave him three sons and three daughters. He later served in the Royal Navy against French and Scottish naval forces from 1544 to 1547. Knighted in Edinburgh by Edward Seymour, 1st Earl of Hertford <EdwardSeymour(1DSomerset).htm>, for his role in the capture of the city in 1544 he also took part in the siege of Boulogne in 14 Sep that year. Under John Dudley, 2nd Earl of Warwick <JohnDudley(1DNorthumberland).htm> he saw action against the French at the Battle of Spearhead in 1545 and was sent as one of the peace commissioners to France the following year. Commanding the English fleet during the invasion of Scotland by Edward Seymour <EdwardSeymour(1DSomerset).htm> he provided naval artillery support at the Battle of Pinkie on 15 Sep 1547. Appointed Governor of Boulogne in 1547 he successfully defended the city against a French siege from 1549 to 1550. That same year, with Henry Manners, 2nd Earl of Rutland <HenryManners(2ERutland).htm>, he became the Lord-Lieutenant of Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire. <../images/Clinton,Edward(1ELincoln)02.jpg> <../images/Clinton,Edward(1ELincoln)02.jpg> Portrait of Edward Clinton, Earl of Lincoln <../images/Fitzgerald,Elizabeth(CLincoln)01.jpg> <../images/Fitzgerald,Elizabeth(CLincoln)01.jpg> Portrait of Elizabeth "Geraldine" Fitzgerald, countess of Lincoln <../images/Clinton,Edward(1ELincoln)03.jpg> <../images/Clinton,Edward(1ELincoln)03.jpg> Edward Clinton, Earl of Lincoln British School, probably after Cornelis Ketel circa 1575 National Maritime Museum, London Briefly serving as an envoy to France in 1551, he was involved in the attempt to put Lady Jane Grey <../aboutJaneGrey.htm> on the throne, being one of the peers who signed the device <../Documents/EdwardWill.htm> of the King <../aboutEdward.htm>.After Ursula Stourton's death, he married Elizabeth Fitzgerald, the "Fair Geraldine" of the Earl of Surrey <HenryHoward(E.Surrey).htm> and widow of Sir Anthony Browne <AnthonyBrowne(SirKnight).htm>. She was a great friend of Elizabeth <../aboutElizabeth.htm>.After becoming the Lord-Lieutenant of Lincolnshire in 1552, Clinton later took part in the defeat of Wyatt's Rebellion <../Documents/Wyatt Rebellion.htm> in Kent in 1554. Becoming Lord General of Lord Pembroke <WilliamHerbert(1EPembroke).htm>'s expedition he fought with Spanish forces at the Battle of Saint-Quentin on 10 Aug 1557. Upon his return to England, Clinton took command of the English fleet and began raiding the French coast burning the town on Conquet and the surrounding area in 1558. Having served as Lord High Admiral <../Documents/lord_high_admiral.htm> under King Edward VI <../aboutEdward.htm> from 1550 to 1554, again was put in he charge after the accesion of Elizabeth, and served from 1559 to 1585. A joint commander with Ambrose Dudley, 3rd Earl of Warwick <AmbroseDudley(3EWarwick).htm> of a large army, he quelled the rising <../Documents/NorthernRebellion.htm> of the Earls of Northumberland <ThomasPercy(7ENorthumberland).htm> and Westmoreland in 1570 and Elizabeth <../aboutElizabeth.htm> created him Earl of Lincoln in 1572, employing him on diplomatic missions to France. He was also an investor in voyages of privateering and colonization. He had a stake in Drake <FrancisDrake.htm>'s round-the-world voyage of 1577-80 and probably in Humphrey Gilbert <HumphreyGilbert(Sir).htm>'s expedition to America, 1578. When the latter failed he was one of those charged with enquiry into the causes. to Bios Page <../bios1.htm> to Family Page <../CLINTON.htm> to Peerage Page <../Peerage1.htm> to Home Page <../index2.html>
