Thomas was born in 1564 in Wiston, Sussex, England. Thomas' father was Thomas Shirley and his mother was Anne Kempe dau of Sir Thomas Kempe of Wye by Catherine Chenye. His maternal grandparents were Thomas Kempe and Cecily Katherine Cheyney. He had two brothers and seven sisters, named Anthony, Robert, Isabel, Maria, Elizabeth (Margaret), Cecily, Cicely, Jane and Anne. He was the second oldest of the ten children.General Notes
