Gilbert, known as Red Earl, was born on September 2nd, 1243 in Christchurch, Hampshire, England.1   Red Earl's father was Earl of Gloucester Richard De Clare and his mother was Maud De Lacie.  His paternal grandparents were Gilbert (The Surety) De Clare and Isobel Marshall; his maternal grandparents were Earl of Lincoln John (The Surety) De Lacy and Margaret De Quincy. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, Bogo, Isabel, Margaret and Eglentine.  He was the second oldest of the six children. He had two half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Piers, John, Roese and Eleanor.  He died at the age of 52 on December 7th, 1295 in Monmouth Castle, Gwent, Wales.  He was buried on December 22nd, 1295 in Abbey Tewksbury, Gloucestershire, England.2
