John, known as The Surety, was born in 1192 in Lincoln, Lincolnshire, England.1   The Surety's father was Baron of Halton and Pontefract Roger de Lacy and his mother was Matilda de Clare.  His paternal grandparents were John FitzRichard Clavering de Lacy and Alice de Mandeville; his maternal grandparents were 4th Earl of Hertford, 6th Earl of Clare Richard (The Surety) De Clare and Countess of Gloucester Amica Meullent Of Gloucester. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Tadody and Maude.  He died at the age of 48 on July 22nd, 1240 in Lincoln, Lincolnshire, England.  He was buried in Stanlaw Abbey.2 1
