His paternal grandparents were John Savage and Elizabeth Brereton; his maternal grandparents were Sir Thomas Stanley and Joan Goushill. He had ten brothers and six sisters, named Lawrence, John, Robert, James, Thomas, Humphrey, Richard, William, George, Edward, Eleanor, Margaret, Elizabeth, Savage, Alice and Katherine. He was the second youngest of the seventeen children.-
