Hiram was born in 1793 in North Carolina. Hiram's father was James Underwood and his mother is Keziah Unknown. He had three brothers named William, Caleb and Samuel G.. He was the second youngest of the four children. He died at the age of 87 in February 1880 in Taylor Co.,Kentucky.General Notes

The Kentucky Adjutant General's Report on the Kentucky units of the U.S. Army curing the Civil War, Page 856. The Roll of Company "A", Thirteenth Kentucky Volunteer Infantry, Shows Hiram Sr. was a member of "A" company as a private and that he mustered in on December 30, 1861 at Camp Hobson, Kentucky for a three year enlistment. He was a waiting trial for desertion when the 13th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry was mustered out at Louisville on December 12, 1865. HiramSR. would have been around 69 years of age when he enlisted. No wonder he deserted.
Hiram and Celia were married in a religious ceremony on March 20th, 1810 in Lincoln Co.,Kenutcky. They had nine sons and four daughters, named William C., William A., Thomas E., Calloway, Anderson, Mason, Lafayette, Green Berry, Hiram ,Jr., Nancy Jennie, Virginia Jane, Celia and Mary Jane.
