Matthew was born in 1796 in Edmonson Co.,Kentucky. Matthew's father is Jeremiah Skaggs and his mother was Rebecca Mayse. His paternal grandfather was James ,Jr. Skaggs and his paternal grandmother is Mary Unknown. He had two brothers and three sisters, named William Henry, Stephen, Mary Elizabeth, Lydia and Rebecca. He died at the age of 76 in May 1872.-
