His paternal grandfather was James ,Jr. Skaggs and his paternal grandmother is Mary Unknown. He had four brothers and four sisters, named William, Fielding, Jeremiah, Stephen S., Rachel, Libby, Jane and Louisa. He is the second youngest of the nine children. He had three half-sisters named Elizabeth, Mary and Nancy.-
