William Merrill 
William was born in 1822. William's father was Abel Merrill and his mother was Eliza Cooley. His paternal grandparents were Charles Merrill and Elizabeth UNKNOWN. He had two brothers and eight sisters, named Green Berry, Nelson Cooley, Nancy, Lavisia Vicey, Mary Elizabeth, Martha, Eliza Jane, Susan, Temperance and Keziah. He had a half-brother named Charles Pinkney. He died at the age of 61 on July 18th, 1883 in Jasper County,MS. He was buried in Shady Grove Baptist Church Cemetery,Jasper County,MS.General Notes
Company D, 8th Mississippi Infantry Regiment The original Merrillhouse in Mississippi was built in 1837 by Ferdinand Pippin (latermarried Vicy Merrill), William Merrill, and a slave named Wisdom. Itwas the first framed house in the area. Also known as Put.
According to a 4 May 1988 letter from Woodie Merrill, William Merrill"got his toe shot off" in the Civil War. "I remember Papa tellingwhat a fine Christian that his father was but who relished tellingabout shooting Yankees."
