Virgil Clifton was born on June 29th, 1918 in Neshoba Co.,Mississippi. Virgil Clifton's father was Virgil Evans Marshall and his mother was Callie May Petty. His paternal grandparents are John Marshall and Adaline Unknown; his maternal grandfather was Johnnie J. Petty and his maternal grandmother is Rebecca Joanna Daniel. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Jessie James, Willie Larmar, Rupert Lavern, J. A., Ruby, Lola and Dolly. He is the fourth oldest of the eight children. He had a half-sister named Myrtle.-
