J. A. was born on August 16th, 1927. J. A.'s father was Virgil Evans Marshall and his mother was Callie May Petty. His paternal grandparents are John Marshall and Adaline Unknown; his maternal grandfather was Johnnie J. Petty and his maternal grandmother is Rebecca Joanna Daniel. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Jessie James, Willie Larmar, Virgil Clifton, Rupert Lavern, Ruby, Lola and Dolly. He is the youngest of the eight children. He had a half-sister named Myrtle.-
