James Russell was born in 1871. James Russell's father was Elijah John ,Jr. Keahey and his mother was Margaret Ophelia Hamilton. His paternal grandparents are Elijah John Keahey and Catherine Bethune. He had five brothers and two sisters, named Daniel Reed, John Jesse, Henry Alexander, Hardy L., Frank E., Belzora and Sarah J.. He is the fourth oldest of the eight children.-
