His paternal grandparents were William Simmons Daniel and Permintia Wesley Stewart. He has six brothers and four sisters, and also two siblings of unknown gender, named Eugene, Jessica Clark, Oscar, Johnnie, R. B., Clifton, Bertha, Sadie, Nanie Ruth, Icynae, Mosie and Avey. He is the sixth youngest of the thirteen children.-
