Eleanor was born in 1246 in Bernard Castle, Gainford, England.  Eleanor's father was John de Baliol and her mother was Dervorgilla de Galloway.  Her paternal grandparents are Hugh de Baliol and Cecily de la Fontaine; her maternal grandfather was Alan De Galloway and her maternal grandmother is Margaret Huntingdon. She had five brothers and four sisters, named Hugh, Alexander, John (jr), Alan, William, Cecilia, Mary, Ada and Margaret.  She is the fourth oldest of the ten children.

‌Eleanor and John "The Black" were married in a religious ceremony in Bernard Castle, Gainford, England.  They had a son named John.
