His paternal grandparents were Noah Gifford and Mary Bowerman; his maternal grandparents were Azor Nash and Lucy Shaw. He had six brothers and three sisters, named Icabod Bowerman, Samuel Kendall, William Pitts, Moses, Enos Curtis, Herber Chase Kimball, Mary Elizabeth, Rhoda and Rachel.
