Oscar Charles was born in 1864 in MN. Oscar Charles' father was Charles Gatton Coen and his mother was Mary Elizabeth Pagen. His paternal grandparents were Levi Coen and Sarah Elizabeth Gatton; his maternal grandparents are David Pagin and Rebecca Gifford. He had six brothers and five sisters, named Franklin, Clarence, Louis, Edwin Loren, George, Arthur, Orpha, Effie Levara, Elizabeth Rebecca (Lizzie), Hattie and Mary Edith. He is the third oldest of the twelve children. He has five half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Harry Austin, J. Willard, Martin Luther, Lloyd Byron, Floyd Earl, Gracie May and Lorena Gertrude.-
