William was born about 1172 in Thirsk & Slingsby, Lincolnshire, England.  William's father was Nigel de Mowbray and his mother was Mabel de Clare.  His paternal grandparents were Roger de Mowbray and Alice de Gaunt; his maternal grandparents were Roger "The Good" De Clare and Maud de St. Hilary. He had three brothers and a sister, named Robert, Philip, Roger and Alice.  He was the third oldest of the five children. He had two half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Richard, John, Christian and Aelina.  He died in 1223 in at his castle in the Isle of Axlholme.  He was buried in Abbey of Newburgh, Yorkshire, England.
