Nigel was born about 1144 in Masham, Yourkshire, England. Nigel's father was Roger de Mowbray and his mother was Alice de Gaunt. His paternal grandparents were Nigel de Albini and Gundred De Gournay; his maternal grandparents were Walter de Gaunt and Maud Matilda of Brittany. He had a sister named Adelia. He had three half-brothers named Hugh, Henry and Robert. He died in 1191.General Notes
Nigel de Mowbray, 2nd Baron by tenure, like his father, was a Crusader and died on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land in 1192-3. He married Mand or Mabel, daughter of Roger de Clare.
