Mabel was born about 1152 in Tonbridge Castle, Kent, England.  Mabel's father was Roger "The Good" De Clare and her mother was Maud de St. Hilary.  Her paternal grandparents were Richard fitz Gilbert de Clare and Adeliza de Meschines De Gernon; her maternal grandparents were James de St. Hilaire and Aveline. She had five brothers and two sisters, named Richard, James, Roger, John, Henry, Aveline and Elena.  She was the oldest of the eight children. She had a half-brother and a half-sister, named William V and Alice.  She died about 1203.
