John was born on May 6th, 1748 in Middleboro,Plymouth,MA. John's father was John Thompson and his mother was Lydia Wood. His maternal grandparents were Elnathan Wood and Mary Billington. He had five brothers and six sisters, named Shubeal, Isaac, Ezra, Lydia, Uzza, Susanna, Lydia, Sarah, Uzza, Fear and Priscilla. He was the fourth oldest of the twelve children.
