His paternal grandparents were John Worland and Catherine Gough. He had seven brothers and five sisters, named John Middleton, Morris, Joseph Masson, Charles Boris, George Henry, Tobias (Toby), James, Mary Elizabeth, Sarah Ellen, Susan Frances, Theresa and Louella (Ella). He was the sixth youngest of the thirteen children.-
