Mary Elizabeth was born on November 19th, 1848 in Shelby IN. Mary Elizabeth's father was Thomas Ignatius Worland and her mother was Sarah Ann Thompson. Her paternal grandparents were John Worland and Catherine Gough. She had eight brothers and four sisters, named John Middleton, Morris, Joseph Masson, Thomas, Charles Boris, George Henry, Tobias (Toby), James, Sarah Ellen, Susan Frances, Theresa and Louella (Ella). She was the oldest of the thirteen children.-
