David Hershel was born on February 14th, 1895 in Greensburg,Decatur,IN. David Hershel's father was John A. Sweezy and his mother was Martha Bernice Toothman. His paternal grandparents were Daniel Sweezey and Mary Jane Gary; his maternal grandparents were Joseph TOOTHMAN and Sarah EVANS. He had three brothers and five sisters, named John A, Perry Edgar W., William, Leora, Daisy E, Myrta, Rena Bell and Hazel Jane. He was the third youngest of the nine children.
