Her paternal grandparents were William Morris and Isabella Gibson Howe; her maternal grandparents were Matthew Godfrey and Sarah Valentine. She had four brothers and a sister, named William Godfrey, James, Fredrick, Jonathan and Tabitha. She was the youngest of the six children.
