Jonathan was born on May 1st, 1792. Jonathan's father was William Morris and his mother was Sarah Godfrey. His paternal grandparents were William Morris and Isabella Gibson Howe; his maternal grandparents were Matthew Godfrey and Sarah Valentine. He had three brothers and two sisters, named William Godfrey, James, Fredrick, Tabitha and Sarah. He was the second youngest of the six children.
