King Anthony (Mone) Deckard, was born January 5, 1843, to John Stuart and
Elizabeth Deckard. He married Nancy Caroline Clendennin on January 14,
1864, in Monroe County, Indiana. Nancy was the daughter of Charles
Americas and Lavinia (Allen) Clendennin. She was born c. 1846/7.
It appears that Nancy died between 1880 when her name appeared in the
Indiana Census in Monroe County, Polk Township p. 80, and November 13,
1888, when King married Mary J. Eads in Monroe County, Indiana. Can
anybody pinpoint the date of death any closer?
King volunteered his services in the Civil War. He served as a private in
an unassigned company of the 32nd regiment, according to VETERAN'S RECORDS
ENROLLMENTS MONROE COUNTY, INDIANA, 1886, for the State of Indiana. Has
anyone attempted to get a copy of his pension file from the National
Archives?
King died on March 15, 1920. His undated obituary reads, "Old Soldier
Falls Dead at Table. Eating dinner with the family Monday, King Deckard,
a
leading citizen, veteran soldier and large land owner of Polk township,
fell dead at the table. The cause was from heart failure following three
weeks of gripp from which it was thought he had recovered.
"He had been about the house and seemed quite well during the morning,
coming to the table, when in the act of eating he suddenly expired. He
was
a life-long rsident of that section, aged 75, a soldier of the 33d Indiana
and was the father of 12 children. He was one of the well-to-do men of
Polk township.
"Funeral from the home Wednesday at 11 o'clock in charge of Rev. Phillips
and burial at Allen's Creek."[southernrarl.FTW]
